Have you tried to press the small RST button during the connection attempts? I have had connection problems with other boards where hitting Reset or Boot/Load have worked. The D1 Mini Esp32 should have the logic to control the pins for program load. The 0.96" module has 7 pins (from left to right): GND (Ground) VCC (3.3 or 5V DC power) D0 (Clock) D1 (Data: SDA or MOSI) RES (Reset) DC (Data/Command) CS (Chip Select) This project which aimed at connecting an Arduino to the same 0.96" OLED module helped a lot in finding the purpose of the D0 and D1 pin.
I have a project that uses Wemos D1 mini, a4988 driver and Nema 17 motor. when i run the end point from browser, it runs ok. But when I use it via http widget, using android, it struggles, doesnt move much . with browser, if it rotates 7 times, with http widget - 20 degrees. If you need connections, let me know. 5v supplied to wemos, 12v to a4988.
